This series focuses on the constructed meaning of a specific landscape. The first image shows a popular view of Painted Wall at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado. The second image documents actual National Parks Service signage posted at this viewpoint site. The third image, a closer view of the surface of Painted Wall, is obscured by the Empire State Building. Fourth, the Empire State Building is replaced in the Manhattan skyline by a roughly proportional section of Painted Wall as imaged by the US Geologic Survey. Last, the initial view of the landscape is overrun by hundreds of twisted copies of the Empire State Building tracing its contours.
